Work is progressing on transforming the former Queenscliff Community Health Centre site into a three-storey social housing complex by one of Australia’s leading community housing providers, Link Wentworth.
The project is being delivered by Link Wentworth under Round One of the Australian Government’s Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF) with more than $6.5 million in state government funding.
Link Wentworth CEO Andrew McAnulty said 37 apartments are being built on the site with homes reserved for women at risk of homelessness and seniors 55 years of age and over.
“The old Health Centre was at the heart of the Queenscliff community for more than 40 years and by re-imagining and transforming the building it will continue to serve as an asset for the community, we will turn it into a place to call home for some of our most vulnerable, including older women,’ Mr McAnulty said.
Census data from 2021 reveals women 55 years of age and over are the fastest growing group experiencing homelessness showing a six per cent increase.
“Lower lifetime earnings, limited superannuation, and rising living costs mean women are often among our most at risk,” he said.
“We see it all the time through Link Wentworth that a safe, stable, affordable home can change the course of someone’s life. The Queenscliff development will do exactly that.”
To honour the history and architecture of the original Health Centre the site and surrounding amenities have been incorporated into the design.
The new complex will include 27 studio apartments, 8 x one-bedroom apartments, and 2 x two-bedroom apartments.
The Queenscliff development is expected to be completed by late 2026.
