How we celebrated International Women’s Day

On Wednesday 1 March, we were privileged to welcome our staff and residents to an early International Women’s Day celebration in Parramatta. The IWD theme for 2023 is Embrace Equity.

With older women over 55 identified as the fastest growing cohort at risk of homelessness, the issue of gender equality is close to Link Wentworth’s heart. We understand the importance of elevating women from all walks of life. Through a number of upcoming projects related to women’s safety, we hope to play an even bigger role in empowering women to access education, services and housing.

#EmbraceEquity

At our celebration on 1 March, we heard speeches from SydWest Multicultural Services CEO Elfa Moraitakis and our very own Margaret Maljkovic about the current challenges facing women today and how we can better embrace equity. From housing insecurity to domestic violence to cultural and linguistic barriers, it is clear we still have a way to go.

We were also lucky to hear from Link Wentworth resident and TAG member Lynne who is a very busy and committed community volunteer in the Hawkesbury. Lynne shared stories from her 16 years’ volunteering at the Country Women’s Association of NSW and 11 years at Hawkesbury’s Helping Hands, and spoke about why she finds giving back so important.

To top it all off, we were treated with a joyous performance from the ‘With One Voice’ Redfern Community Choir while we had high tea,

Thank you to all our speakers and performers, and to the staff and residents who shared the celebration with us. It was a special day!
